Capital:Canberra

Canberra is Australia’s Capital City. Meaning “meeting place” in the indigenous Ngunnawal language, you will find here the seat of Australia’s Federal Parliament, and all her national institutions. Located north of the Australian snowfields, Canberra enjoys a cooler climate and a population of 324,800.

State Nomination

Government in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) regularly reviews which skills are needed in a particular area to help boost the economy.  Migration and Information Services, Economic Development is a Directorate of the ACT Government, and manages the ACT’s Skilled Migration Program.

If you would like to live in the ACT, the State Government may be able to nominate you for a Skilled Nominated subclass 190 visa. (Note that the Skilled Regional Sponsored subclass 489 visa is not available in the ACT). This visa would allow you to live and work in either Canberra, or any other area within the ACT.

Be sure to check whether you qualify before you apply for a State nominated visa, or you can remove any doubt by applying for a Skilled Migration assessment which will determine which Skilled Migration visas’ are available to you, and what steps you need to take to obtain them.

Remember that DIAC limits the number of ACT nominations for each migration program year, in accordance with the State Migration Plan. The Government will nominate eligible applicants having regard to the number of places available for people with the occupations, skills and experience required in the ACT.
